ZOOMTEXT TRAINING FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP

NOVEMBER 5-6, 2008

Ai Squared and the NEAT Center at Oak Hill will run a two day ZoomText training for professional development workshop. This comprehensive workshop is designed for trainers and professionals who use ZoomText and would like to learn more tricks and tips about ZoomText to enable them to effectively train their students. This training will be lead by Maurie Hill, an expert user and veteran employee of the company that develops ZoomText, Ai Squared.

The workshop will take place all day November 5th and 6th (Wednesday & Thursday) from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the NEAT Center at Oak Hill, located at 33 Coventry Street in Hartford Connecticut.

Course fee is $500.00 per student including lunch. Funding available through the Legacy Fund for those who qualify. Seating is limited!

Presentation Summary

This workshop is designed for individuals who are interested in improving the quality of instruction available to students who use alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) from inclusive situations to special education programs with a range of student ability levels from beginning communicators to independent communicators. First, we will examine the components needed for successful communication competence: social, linguistic, literacy strategic, and operational skills and how that impacts successful AAC use from a light to a high tech perspective. Next we will look at how to improve social conversational skills with AAC users. Vocabulary management and access to curricula material and the importance of easy participation in discussions will be addressed. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of building linguistic competence through a variety of literacy driven activities. In addition an integrated literacy instruction program for students and early literacy instructional strategies will be demonstrated. Ideas and strategies that promote and scaffold the independent use of AAC will be highlighted. This presentation is for professionals and paraprofessionals who are working with students K-12 who are using AAC or in need of AAC.

Presenter Bio
Pati King-DeBaun is a speech language pathologist who has specialized in communication for children with severe disabilities. Pati speaks and consults in a variety of classrooms internationally on the topics of interactive communication, augmentative communication, and early literacy for children with disabilities. She has written numerous articles and published materials on the topic of augmentative communication and early literacy skills for children with disabilities. She has worked with numerous universities worldwide teaching courses and seminars on emergent literacy, communication development and disabilities. Pati has been instrumental in developing a wide range of innovative literacy and communication materials for children with disabilities.

Adaptive software can enable users to accomplish a variety of everyday tasks with their computers, from email and the web, to word processing, spreadsheets and more. Come join us, have some fun and learn useful strategies, fun tips and tricks!

As a ZoomText dealer, it's always in your best interest to learn more about the product so that you can sell it even more effectively than you already do. We have an opportunity for you coming up soon! On November 30th through December 1st in Hartford, CT, we are teaming up with the NEAT Center to give a unique "outside-of-the-box" training.

Maurie Hill, an Ai Squared Product Advocate and ZoomText user herself, will be providing a unique training opportunity highlighting which ZoomText settings and features work best in specific situations. The class is geared toward trainers to give them tips on ZoomText training techniques. To give a few examples, you'll learn how to customize ZoomText for different vision impairments. Additionally, now that Windows 7 has been out for a while, you'll learn the optimal Windows 7 settings for ZoomText users. Plus you'll find out what's new in the latest version of ZoomText 9.18.9 - so new, we haven't even released it yet!

Charlie Collins, owner of Vision Dynamics and an avid ZoomText user and dealer, will tell us about the latest low vision technology tools. He'll also be delivering a motivational speech about overcoming obstacles and how he’s achieved so much success.

Exploring Various Software for Communication

Workshop Summary:

In this introductory workshop, participants will explore a variety of augmentative and alternative communication software that features picture communication symbols (PCS) and vocal output. Participants will learn how to: decipher important features, utilize and modify existing templates; create communication boards; add auditory and visual scanning; and link multiple boards together. Picture It!, Speaking Dynamically Pro, Proloquo2Go, along with other software and apps will be compared and explored. Please bring a flash drive to save your work.

Supporting Transition with Assistive Technology

Workshop Summary:

This workshop will focus on transition planning for students who use assistive technology as they move to new teachers, placements or settings. We will begin with the assumption that IEP teams have already determined that a student with a disability requires AT and the student has been using that AT in the current educational setting. Even though the philosophy of AT transitions included in this workshop are associated to the transition planning that is required for students 16 and older in the Individuals with Disabilities Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA 2004), the processes and strategies discussed will be appropriate for transitions of AT users at any age. We will also discuss how to involve families and students in their own transition process.

As our students become savvy with technology, it is important to integrate multimedia tools directly into classroom activities and the curriculum. During this workshop, we will focus on engaging your students with the use of multimedia (integration of text, graphics, animation, sound, and/or video) to construct and convey knowledge. We will explore: concept-mapping software (such as Inspiration) to brainstorm; creating short digital movies to demonstrate a procedure; a class website that displays student artwork or encourages discussion through blogging; scanning and importing images into PowerPoint for a presentation; and creating electronic student portfolios. Multimedia activities encourage students to work in groups, express their knowledge in various ways, solve problems, revise their own work, and construct important information, while representing information in ways that address a variety of learning styles and challenges.

Taking Clicker 5 to the Next Level

Workshop Summary:

In this intermediate workshop, participants who have had basic Clicker 5 training will learn how to take Clicker 5 to the next level. Create pop-up grids and interactive learning activities, work with user access settings, and create templates and more. Come with your ideas for activities you would like to create for your students. Bring your own digital images or use ours, but come ready to create activities you can use right away in your classroom. Bring a flash drive to save your files.

Oak Hill is pleased to have GW Micro staff presenting five days of Window-Eyes training.  Window-Eyes is a screen reading program used by people who are blind to assist them in using a computer.  Window-Eyes now comes with the powerful capability for individuals to write scripts to enhance the screen reader experience for the user.  Come experience all five days of training from the basics to script training, or, choose from one of the options listed above to best fit your needs.
